Between Spaces by Jasmine Zelaya

Zelaya’s work is informed by her experience as a first generation, LatinX artist. Her mixed media works explore themes of identity, assimilation, and the brown body through familial narratives rich with symbology. At once painterly and glittery, these busy surfaces distract from underlying tensions and the gaze of her subjects.

“There is at once a dual sense of rapture blurred with anguish. The distinction of emotions becomes convoluted.” - Jasmine Zelaya

This exhibition represented a selection past and recent works in a variety of media. Digital design software created an opportunity for Zelaya to explore her practice through an altogether different media. In addition to the framed works on paper and panel, on display were also large prints on vinyl of recent digital paintings she created.

Houston First Corporation contracted Christine to curate an exhibition for a non-traditional exhibition space in the Partnership Tower, in Downtown Houston, TX. This space presents challenges as it is an interior pathway between a parking garage that serves an athletic stadium, hotel and convention center. Christine curated and designed the exhibition, collaborated with the artist on realizing her vision to print her digital paintings, managed onsite logistics, and wrote the materials needed for promotion and social media.
